The History of Recipes

It is quite possible to prove the history of transcribed cooking instructions way back into antiquity, certainly as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, generally, these old records were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.

Interestingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts is a series of stone tablets in Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel `blissful`.

As we move into The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a few scripts describing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into appetizers, entrees and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Additionally, he informs us how the chefs of Roman times were skilled in the use of many spices, including some that we all recognise like thyme, fennel and parsley.

Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many spices and herbs from Arab cooking, including spices such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas led to a surge in books on cooking, the majority of which still exist in private cookery archives.

By the time we get to the twentieth century, cookery books were in high demand, mostly due to more people being able to read, increased leisure time and disposable income.

Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site.
