The History of Recipes
Historians have found proof that recipes existed way back into history, in truth as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, mostly, these old cookbooks were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to historians is a series of clay tablets in Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel wonderful. Later on, in Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts which described recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main course and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. This early Roman chef describes how the ancient chefs made use of many spices, including some familiar names like basil, fennel and parsley. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including spices like coriander, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices prompted a torrent in cookery books, many of which still exist in private collections. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
