The History of Recipes
Experts have proved the existance of recipes far back into distant history, in truth as far back as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. Having said that, generally, these old records were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are a few stone tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel `blissful`. As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of scripts detailing recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his works, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and desserts, something we still use today. He also recounts how the Roman cooks made use of many different herbs, including many that are still in use today such as basil, mint and parsley. During the following few hundred years, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve the best banquets, and because of this the best cooks and their recipes were highly sought after. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cooking and recipe books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, verifying, and recording the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. By the advent of the 20th century, recipe publications were highly popular due to higher levels of literacy, more leisure time and being a little richer. |
