The History of Recipes

It is quite feasible to follow the history of recipes back into history, certainly as far into history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, in the main part, these old records were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.

Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to academics is a series of ancient tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel wonderful and blissful.

Progressing into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few scripts describing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, entrees and afters, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also tells us how the Roman chefs used a good variety of herbs and spices, including some that we all recognise such as basil, fennel and asafoetida.

Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods, spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices led to a surge in cookery books, the majority of which are now in private collections.

Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes such as those found on our web site.
