The History of Recipes
We are able to read the history of written recipes way back into the far past, at least as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, mostly, these ancient records were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts is a series of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel exhilarated. As we move on, we have a couple of interesting books which date from the fourteenth century - a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these two books are unconnected to the indian curry that we all know today, but rather accounts of the types of food prepared by the chefs of the rich people of the time. During the next few centuries, the upper-class families of Europe competed with each other to offer the most exotic banquets, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipes became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it was during the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, testing, and publishing the recipes of their peers. The revolution that is television brings us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on this site. |
