The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of meal recipes far back into the far past, at least as far into history as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. However, mostly, these early records were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a number of documents detailing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into appetizers, main course and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also informs us how the Roman chefs made use of many aromatic flavours, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example basil, mint and dill. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought back many spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including spices such as basil and coriander. These new herbs and spices led to a torrent in manuscripts on cooking, the majority of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. The arrival of television gave us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
