The History of Recipes
Food historians have proved the existence of recipes way back into ancient history, in fact as far as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, generally, these early cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius created a collection of scripts showing how to cook the recipes prepared by the Romans. In his works, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvres, main course and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius tells us how the ancient chefs were skilled in the use of many different spices and herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs for example bay, mint and parsley. Over the next few centuries, the rich families of Europe strove to lay on the most extravagent meals, and consequentially cooks and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cooking and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collating, testing, and publishing the recipes of their peers. The introduction of television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes like those on this site. |
