The History of Recipes

It is quite feasible to prove the history of recipes far back into the far past, in truth as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. However, generally, these old recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.

During the time of the Roman Empire a Roman scholar, called Apicius, assembled some scrolls which described recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Additionally, he recounts how the cooks of Roman times used a wide range of herbs and spices, including some that we all recognise for example basil, fennel and asafoetida.

In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and spices from the East, including coriander, basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices prompted an outbreak in cookery books, many of which still exist in academic collections.

Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes just like those on our web site.
