The History of Recipes
Historians have tracked the existence of recipes back into history, in truth as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, in the main part, these early cook books were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there are a couple of interesting cookery books from the fourteenth century : one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, they have no connection with the curry that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of food eaten by the rich and powerful. By the arrival of the twentieth century, recipe publications are increasing in popularity due to higher levels of literacy, more leisure time and having more money. |
