The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to follow the history of transcribed cooking instructions back into the distant past, in fact as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, these, ancient cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to food historians are some clay tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel exhilarated. Moving on, there are a couple of books which date from the 1300s : a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these books have no connection with the curry that is served today, but instead accounts of the types of meals served to the nobility of that period. Later, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many new spices and herbs from Arab cooking, such as parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas caused an outbreak in manuscripts on food, the majority of which are kept safe in private libraries. During the next few hundred years, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe strove to lay on the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, cooks and their collection of recipes could command a high salary. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s that formal cookery and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collecting, trying out, and publishing recipes of the day. By the time we get to the twentieth century, recipe publications were starting to become popular mostly due to more people being able to read, more free time and having more money to spend. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us celebrity TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
