The History of Recipes
We can read the history of `recipes` back into history, in fact as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these old recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to historians is a collection of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Later on, there are some books which appeared in the 1300s - one book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these are unconnected to the indian curry that appears on menues today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals cooked for the rich people of those days. For the next few years, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe strove to serve the most exotic meals, and because of this cooks and their recipes were much in demand. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cookery and recipe publications became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collecting, trying out, and recording recipes common in their social group. By the advent of the twentieth century, recipe publications are greatly in demand mostly as a result of higher levels of literacy, more free time and having more money. |
