The History of Recipes
Written recipes as a concept can be observed back into antiquity, in fact as far back into history as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, generally, these old cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Moving on, we find some books dating from the 14th Century : a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these two books are nothing to do with the curry that is popular today, but instead recipes for the types of meals enjoyed by the rich people of the time. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods, spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas created a surge in publications on food, many of which are now in private libraries. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Pear Gelasaurs recipe.
