The History of Recipes
Food historians have traced the existence of recipes back into history, in truth as far as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, sadly, these ancient cook books were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Later on, we find two interesting books from the 14th Century : a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these two books are unconnected to the indian curry that is served today, but instead accounts of the types of food prepared by the chefs of the rich people of those days. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods, spices and herbs from the holy lands, including basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices created a torrent in books on cookery, the majority of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. The introduction of the TV gave us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes just like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
