Ingredients
1/2 cup pearl barley
1 1/2 cup water or stock pinch of salt and pe, pper
2 cup broccoli florets, lightly cooked
1 rib celery, finely chopped
1 small carrot, shredded vinaigrette (recip, e follows)
Directions
Place pearl barley and water in a pot and bring to a boil. Reduce
heat to medium and cook for about 45 minutes or until slightly soft.
Rinse under cold water and drain. Blend barley with vegetables. Add
vinaigrette to mixture and allow to marinate for 20 minutes before
serving. Makes 4 servings.

The History of Recipes
Historians have proved the existance of recipes back into ancient history, at least as far into history as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, sadly, these old cook books were just simple pictorial instructions for meal preparation.
Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius compiled some scripts detailing recipes prepared by the Romans. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals were divided into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius also describes how the Roman chefs used a good variety of spices, including some familiar names like basil, fennel and parsley. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods, spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes created an eruption in manuscripts on cookery, some of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. By the arrival of the twentieth century, recipe books were highly popular due to increased literacy, people having more leisure time and having more money to spend. |
