The History of Recipes
Written recipes as an idea can be traced way back into antiquity, in truth as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. However, mostly, these old cook books were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to historians are a few stone tablets in Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `wonderful`. Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a number of documents which described recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, Apicius describes how the roman meals were split into appetizers, entrees and desserts, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius recounts how the Roman chefs used many spices and herbs, including many that are still in use today like thyme, fennel and dill. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and spices from Arab countries, including spices like basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices created an outbreak in cookery books, some of which are now in private collections. The TV revolution brings us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
We hope you enjoy this Pears Carribean recipe.
