The History of Recipes

It is quite feasible to prove the history of written cooking instructions far back into the distant past, in truth as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old recipes were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.

The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are some stone tablets in Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel wonderful and blissful.

As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote some scripts describing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. Additionally, he informs us how the Roman chefs were skilled in the use of a wide range of aromatic flavors, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as basil, rue and dill.

Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods and herbs from Arab cuisine, such as coriander, parsley, and basil. These new spices and herbs caused a surge in publications on food, many of which are kept safe in private libraries.

The revolution that is television gave us cooking programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on sites such as the one you are reading now.
