The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be traced far back into distant history, certainly as far as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe even further. Having said that, mostly, these ancient cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts are a few stone tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel wonderful. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we find a couple of cookery books which date from the 1300s : a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these books are unconnected to the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the rich and wealthy people of that time. Over the next few hundred years, the powerful and wealthy competed to lay on the most exotic meals, and consequentially chefs and their collection of recipes became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cookery and recipe books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to assembling, testing, and writing down popular recipes of the day. The arrival of TV gave us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on this web site. |
