The History of Recipes
We can read the history of `recipes` far back into distant history, in fact as far as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, mostly, these ancient cookbooks were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to academics are a few ancient tablets in the Sumerian language describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel wonderful. Later on, we find two books from the 14th Century - a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these books are unconnected to the indian curry that appears on menues today, but rather descriptions of the types of food enjoyed by the upper classes of the period. For the next few years, the powerful and wealthy strove to lay on the best banquets, and consequentially cooks and their recipes were at a premium. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cookery and recipe publications really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, spent years to collecting, testing, and publishing the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. By the advent of the twentieth century, cookbooks are starting to become popular due to better eduction, people having more spare time and having more disposable income. |
