The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of recipes back into ancient history, at least as far into history as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, generally, these ancient records were just simple pictorial instructions for preparing food.
As we move into Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of scripts detailing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his works, he recounts how the roman meals were split into starters, main meal and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Additionally, he tells us how the cooks of Roman times made use of many different spices, including some familiar names like bay, mint and parsley. During the next few centuries, the rich families of the West competed to offer the most exotic banquets, and as a result the best chefs and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. However, it was during the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe collections became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, testing, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. The revolution that is television brings us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on this web site. |
