The History of Recipes
It is possible to read the history of written recipes way back into ancient history, at least as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. However, these, early recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts is a series of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel blissful. Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius created a collection of scripts describing recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. He also tells us how the ancient chefs were skilled in the use of a good variety of aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks such as thyme, fennel and asafoetida. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and basil. The introduction of these new foods and spices caused a surge in manuscripts on cookery, some of which are now in private libraries. The arrival of television brought us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes such as those found on sites such as this. |
