The History of Recipes

We can follow the history of written recipes far back into the far past, certainly as far back as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, in the main part, these early records were just primitive pictorial recipes for preparing food.

In fact, the oldest recipe discovered, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are some clay tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`.

Later, we find two interesting books which appeared in the fourteenth century ; a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these two books are unconnected to the indian food that appears on menues today, but instead descriptions of the types of food eaten by the rich and wealthy people of those days.

For the decades that followed, the families of Europe competed with each other to serve the most exotic meals, and consequentially the best chefs and their recipe collections were highly sought after. Nevertheless, it was during the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe publications rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collecting, verifying, and writing down popular recipes of the day.

By the time we get to the 20th century, cookbooks were in high demand, mostly as a result of better eduction, people having increased spare time and being a little richer.

The arrival of television gave us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes such as those found on our web site.
