The History of Recipes
Historians have tracked the existance of recipes far back into history, at least as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. However, generally, these early cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe found, according to experts in ancient history are some ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel `blissful`. During the time of the Roman Empire a roman called Apicius wrote a number of documents describing recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into appetizers, main course and desserts, something we still use today. He also tells us how the early Romans used many spices and herbs, including a few you will know for example bay, fennel and parsley. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods, spices and herbs from the East, such as parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices led to a torrent in books on cooking, many of which are kept safe in academic collections. By the arrival of the 20th century, cook books were in great demand, due to increased literacy, people having more spare time and a general increase in wealth. The introduction of television gave us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
