The History of Recipes
Historians have proved the existance of recipes back into history, in fact as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. However, these, early cookbooks were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius created some documents which described recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also informs us how the cooks of Roman times made use of a good variety of herbs and spices, including some that we all recognise like basil, mint and parsley. For the decades that followed, the rich families of the West tried to serve up the most exotic banquets, and as a result cooks and their recipes were much in demand. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cookery and cookery books became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, verifying, and writing down recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. The arrival of television brings us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on our web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Pecan Or Walnut Loaf recipe.
