The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be traced way back into ancient history, certainly as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these early recipes were just simple pictorial recipes for food preparation.
Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we have a couple of recipe books which date from the 1300s - one book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these are not about the spicy food that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals enjoyed by the upper classes of that time. Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of spices and herbs from the East, including spices such as coriander, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices prompted an increase in manuscripts on cookery, many of which are kept safe in academic collections. The arrival of television brings us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on this site. |
We hope you enjoy this Pecan Pudding recipe.
