The History of Recipes
Academics have proved the existence of recipes back into history, certainly as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, these, old cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
As we move into The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few documents describing recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main course and afters, something we still use today. This early Roman chef recounts how the chefs of Roman times were skilled in the use of many different aromatic flavors, including a few you will know for example basil, fennel and parsley. In the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many spices and herbs from the holy lands, such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas prompted a torrent in manuscripts on cookery, many of which still exist in private libraries. By the arrival of the twentieth century, cooking books were in high demand, mostly due to better eduction, people having more free time and disposable income. |
