The History of Recipes

Experts have traced the existence of recipes back into the distant past, in fact as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these old cookbooks were just primitive pictorial instructions for meal preparation.

Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to academics is a series of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel wonderful.

As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there are a couple of books published in the 1300s : a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these are nothing to do with the curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals on the tables of the upper classes of the period.

In the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many new foods and spices from the Middle-East, including spices such as parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices prompted a surge in manuscripts on cooking, most of which are now in academic collections.

Over the following few hundred years, the powerful families of Europe strove to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and as a result chefs and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cooking and recipe books became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day.

By the arrival of the 20th century, recipe publications were starting to become popular as a result of increased literacy, increased leisure time and having more disposable income.

The introduction of television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on our site.
