The History of Recipes

It is quite possible to prove the history of written cooking instructions back into history, in truth as far as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these early cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.

Progressing into Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few scripts which described recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals were divided into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and dessert, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also tells us how the Roman chefs used many spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as basil, rue and parsley.

Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought us many new spices and herbs from the holy land, including spices such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes prompted an explosion in manuscripts on food, the majority of which are now in academic collections.

The introduction of the TV brought us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this recipe site.
