1 1/2 lb liver
1 large onion, diced
1 tbsp butter or
1 tbsp other shortening
2 qt bread crumbs

The History of Recipes

Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be found back into the far past, in truth as far back as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. In practice though, generally, these early cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.

In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to food historians is a collection of stone tablets in the Sumerian language describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel blissful.

Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a few documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, main course and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius recounts how the Roman cooks made use of many different spices, including some that we all recognise for example basil, rue and dill.

Over the succeeding few centuries, the powerful families of the West strove to lay on the most extravagent meals, and because of this cooks and their recipe collections could command a high salary. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe collections became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, testing, and writing down the recipes of their peers.

The TV revolution brought us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.

And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on this recipe site.
