The History of Recipes
Written recipes as an idea can be observed way back into antiquity, in truth as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these ancient cook books were just very basic pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to historians are a few ancient tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel wonderful. Continuing our culinary historical journey, there were two interesting cookery books which were published in the fourteenth century ; one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these are nothing to do with the curry that we all know today, but instead accounts of the types of food on the tables of the upper classes of the period. Over the succeeding few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Europe tried to serve the most extravagent meals, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipe collections were much in demand. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that formal cookery and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The TV revolution brings us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on our web site. |
