The History of Recipes

Historians have proved the existence of recipes far back into ancient history, in truth as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, mostly, these early records were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.

Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to food historians is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel wonderful.

Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled some scripts which described recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, he describes how the meals were separated into appetizers, main meal and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. He also recounts how the Roman chefs were skilled in the use of a good variety of spices, including some familiar names like thyme, rue and parsley.

In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and spices from the holy land, including spices such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes led to an eruption in books on cooking, many of which are now in private cookery archives.

Over the next few centuries, the rich and powerful families of the West tried to serve the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially chefs and their collection of recipes could command a high salary. However, it was during the 19th century that fine cooking and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, spent years to collecting, testing, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them.

By the arrival of the twentieth century, cookery books were increasing in popularity as a result of better eduction, leisure time and having more money to spend.

The introduction of television gave us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes such as those found on this web site.
