The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be found far back into ancient history, certainly as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these early cook books were just simple pictorial instructions for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are some stone tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a collection of documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his works, he recounts how the meals were split into appetizers, main course and desserts, a very modern way of dining. Additionally, he tells us how the chefs of Roman times used a wide range of herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs for example basil, fennel and dill. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many new spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including spices like coriander, parsley, and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas created an increase in books on cooking, most of which are kept safe in private libraries. By the time we get to the 1900s, cookbooks are starting to become popular mostly due to higher levels of literacy, people having increased spare time and a general increase in wealth. The arrival of television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
