The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to prove the history of written cooking instructions way back into the distant past, in fact as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. However, in the main part, these ancient cook books were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to academics are a few clay tablets in Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel wonderful and blissful. Progressing into Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a few documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. He describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and afters, a very modern way of dining. He also describes how the ancient cooks were skilled in the use of many aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks such as basil, fennel and dill. Later on in the 1400s, the Crusaders brought back a variety of foods and spices from Arab cooking, including spices like coriander, basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices prompted a surge in manuscripts on food, most of which still exist in private collections. The introduction of the TV brought us TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as this. |
