The History of Recipes
Experts have traced the existance of recipes way back into distant history, in fact as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and maybe even further. In practice though, generally, these old recipes were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
During Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius recounts how the meals were separated into starters, entrees and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius also recounts how the ancient chefs were skilled in the use of many different herbs and spices, including some familiar names such as basil, mint and parsley. During the succeeding few centuries, the upper-class families of the West strove to serve the most extravagent meals, and because of this chefs and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 1800s that cooking and recipe publications became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes like those on our web site. |
