The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of `recipes` way back into antiquity, in truth as far as early Egypt, and maybe even further. However, mostly, these early cook books were just basic pictorial instructions for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts in ancient history are a few ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. As we move on, there were two interesting cookery books which appeared in the 1300s - a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these are unconnected to the indian food that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals eaten by the upper classes of that period. During the next few centuries, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe tried to lay on the most extravagent meals, and as a result chefs and their recipes increased in prestige. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe collections rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing popular recipes of the day. By the advent of the 20th century, cookery books were increasing in popularity mostly as a result of increased literacy, increased leisure time and a general increase in wealth. |
