The History of Recipes
It is possible to read the history of meal recipes far back into distant history, at least as far back into history as the Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, these, old cook books were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history are a few tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel `blissful`. Later, we find a couple of interesting books from the fourteenth century - a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these are not about the spicy food that is served today, but rather accounts of the types of food prepared by the chefs of the wealthy. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods, spices and herbs from the holy lands, including spices like coriander, basil and rosemary. These new culinary innovations prompted a torrent in manuscripts on cookery, the majority of which still exist in private cookery archives. For the decades that followed, the powerful and wealthy competed with each other to offer the best banquets, and consequentially the best chefs and their recipes increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cooking and cookery books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to collating, verifying, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. The arrival of television gave us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
