The History of Recipes
Written recipes as an idea can be tracked way back into the distant past, certainly as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. In practice though, these, old records were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
Later on, there were two interesting recipe books which date from the 14th Century - a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these books are nothing to do with the indian food that is served today, but rather accounts of the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the rich people of the time. By the advent of the twentieth century, cookery books are increasing in popularity mostly due to more people being able to read, more leisure time and being a little richer. |
