The History of Recipes
Academics have proved the existence of recipes back into the distant past, in truth as far back as early Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, sadly, these early cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts are some clay tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel exhilarated. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there are two interesting recipe books which were published in the 14th Century ; a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these are nothing to do with the curry that is served today, but instead descriptions of the types of food on the menues of the rich people of the time. Over the next few centuries, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe tried to offer the most extravagent meals, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipe collections became highly prized. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cooking and cookery books became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collating, verifying, and publishing the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. The introduction of television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes like those on our web site. |
