The History of Recipes
Historians have proved the existence of recipes far back into distant history, certainly as far into history as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these ancient cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a collection of documents describing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. He recounts how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and afters, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also informs us how the cooks of his times were skilled in the use of many herbs, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens like basil, rue and parsley. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods and herbs from the holy land, including spices like rosemary and coriander. The introduction of these new herbs and spices created an outbreak in manuscripts on cooking, the majority of which are kept safe in academic collections. The introduction of television gave us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
