The History of Recipes

Experts have found proof that recipes existed far back into distant history, in fact as far into history as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. Having said that, generally, these old cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.

Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to historians are a few ancient tablets in Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel blissful and exhilarated.

Closer to modern times, we find some interesting books from the 14th Century : one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, they are not about the curry that we all know today, but rather accounts of the types of food cooked for the rich and powerful of the period.

During the succeeding few centuries, the powerful and wealthy strove to offer the best banquets, and because of this the best cooks and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century that formal cookery and cookery books rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, trying out, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them.

By the arrival of the 1900s, cookbooks are greatly in demand due to higher levels of literacy, people having more spare time and having more money.

Like it or not, the introduction of television gave us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on sites such as the one you are reading now.
