The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as a concept can be tracked far back into antiquity, at least as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, these, ancient cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we find a couple of interesting books which appeared in the 14th Century ; a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these two books are unconnected to the curry that appears on menues today, but rather accounts of the types of food eaten by the nobility of the period. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods and herbs from the holy lands, such as rosemary and coriander. The introduction of these new herbs and spices created an eruption in manuscripts on cooking, some of which still exist in private cookery archives. The TV revolution gave us cooking programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
We hope you enjoy this Poor Man's Rum & Butter Sauce recipe.
