The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be observed back into antiquity, in fact as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe further still. However, these, ancient recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius created some scripts which described recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his publication, Apicius tells us how the meals were divided into appetizers, entrees and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius also describes how the ancient chefs made use of a wide range of herbs, including many that are still in use today like thyme, fennel and asafoetida. Over the next few centuries, the powerful and rich tried to serve up the most exotic meals, and because of this the best chefs and their collection of recipes became highly prized. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that cooking and recipe publications became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, verifying, and recording recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the arrival of the twentieth century, cookbooks are starting to become popular mostly due to higher levels of literacy, people having increased spare time and disposable income. |
We hope you enjoy this Popovers 4 recipe.
