1 lb poppy seeds
3 tbsp lemon juice
2 cup sugar
1 cup milk
1 tbsp butter
Directions
Bring all ingredients to a boil and cook over low heat, stirring
frequently until thick. Cool.

The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to track the history of transcribed cooking instructions back into history, in truth as far as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, generally, these old cook books were just very basic pictorial instructions for food preparation.

Progressing into Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of documents which described recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, he tells us how the roman meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, main course and desserts, something we still use today. Aspicius informs us how the Romans used many different aromatic flavors, including a few you will know like thyme, mint and asafoetida. Later on, we have two interesting cookery books which were published in the 14th Century - a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these are not about the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead descriptions of the types of food prepared by the cooks of the upper classes of that period. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and spices from Arab countries, including coriander, parsley, and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes caused an increase in books on cooking, many of which are kept safe in academic collections. By the advent of the twentieth century, cooking books are increasing in popularity as a result of more people being able to read, people having more leisure time and disposable income. The introduction of the TV brings us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes like those on sites such as this. |
