The History of Recipes
Food historians have traced the existence of recipes far back into distant history, in truth as far into history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. However, sadly, these old records were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts is a collection of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we find two interesting recipe books from the 1300s - a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these are not about the indian curry that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of meals eaten by the nobility of the time. Over the following few hundred years, the powerful and wealthy tried to serve up the best banquets, and consequentially chefs and their recipes became highly prized. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe collections became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, trying out, and writing down recipes common in their social group. The introduction of television gave us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on sites such as this. |
We hope you enjoy this Pork & Scallion Wraps recipe.
