The History of Recipes
Historians have tracked the existance of recipes back into ancient history, in fact as far as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these early records were just primitive pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts is a collection of tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel wonderful. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we have two books dating from the 1300s - a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, they have no connection with the curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather accounts of the types of food eaten by the rich and powerful of the period. Over the following few hundred years, the rich families of the West strove to lay on the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, chefs and their recipes became highly prized. Even so, it was during the 1800s that formal cookery and recipe collections really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the arrival of the 20th century, cooking publications were starting to become popular mostly due to more people being able to read, more spare time and disposable income. |
