The History of Recipes
Experts have traced the existence of recipes way back into history, in truth as far as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further. In practice though, in the main part, these old recipes were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to historians are a few ancient tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel blissful. Later on, there were two interesting recipe books published in the 1300s ; one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, they are unconnected to the curry that appears on menues today, but rather accounts of the types of meals prepared for the rich and powerful of the period. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and spices from Arab cooking, such as rosemary and coriander. These new culinary innovations caused a torrent in publications on food, most of which are now in private collections. During the following few centuries, the powerful and rich houses competed to lay on the best banquets, and consequentially chefs and their recipe collections were highly sought after. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cookery and recipe books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, testing, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. The revolution that is television gave us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on this recipe site. |
