The History of Recipes
Historians have found proof that recipes existed back into history, in truth as far back as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. However, mostly, these ancient records were just simple pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history are a few clay tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful. Closer to modern times, there are two interesting recipe books which date from the fourteenth century - a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these two books have no connection with the spicy food that we all know today, but instead accounts of the types of food prepared by the chefs of the rich people of the period. In the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many new spices and herbs from Arab countries, including spices like coriander, parsley, and basil. These new herbs and spices led to an explosion in books on cooking, most of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. During the succeeding few hundred years, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe tried to offer the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipes increased in prestige. Even so, it was during the 19th century that fine cooking and recipe books became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to assembling, testing, and publishing the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this site. |
