The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be observed way back into antiquity, in fact as far back as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. However, sadly, these old recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts are some ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. As we move into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a few scripts showing how to cook the recipes cooked by the Romans. In his works, Apicius describes how the meals were divided into appetizers, main meal and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius describes how the Roman chefs used many different herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs for example basil, fennel and parsley. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods, spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices led to an eruption in manuscripts on cookery, some of which still exist in private cookery archives. The arrival of TV brings us TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes like those on the site you are now reading. |
