The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to follow the history of written cooking instructions far back into ancient history, certainly as far as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, generally, these old records were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Closer to modern times, there were a couple of cookery books dating from the 14th Century - a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, they have no connection with the indian curry that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of food on the tables of the rich people of that period. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of spices and herbs from the East, such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new foods and spices was responsible for an outbreak in books on cookery, many of which are now in academic collections. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
We hope you enjoy this Pork Chops & Sweet Potatoes recipe.
