The History of Recipes

Recipes as an idea can be tracked back into history, at least as far back as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these old cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.

In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel exhilarated.

Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few documents detailing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his works, he describes how the meals were separated into appetizers, entrees and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. This early Roman chef recounts how the chefs of Roman times used a good variety of spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as basil, mint and parsley.

Later on, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of foods and herbs from Arab cuisine, such as rosemary and coriander. These new foods and tastes led to a surge in publications on food, the majority of which still exist in private cookery archives.

The TV revolution brought us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.

Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on this recipe site.
