The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to follow the history of recipes back into the far past, in fact as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these ancient cook books were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
Later on, there were a couple of recipe books which were published in the fourteenth century : a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, they are not about the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but rather descriptions of the types of food prepared by the cooks of the rich and wealthy people of that period. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and spices from Arab cuisine, including coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices was responsible for an increase in publications on food, many of which are now in private collections. The introduction of the TV brings us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on our site. |
