The History of Recipes

Experts have proved the existence of recipes back into distant history, at least as far as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe further still. However, these, ancient cook books were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.

Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history are a few stone tablets in the Sumerian language describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel exhilarated.

As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we have two interesting books dating from the 14th Century - a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these two books are nothing to do with the curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the rich and wealthy people of that period.

Over the following few hundred years, the wealthy families of Europe competed with each other to serve up the most exotic banquets, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipes could command a high salary. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that formal cookery and recipe books rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy.

The introduction of television brought us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books.

Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading.
