The History of Recipes
Written recipes as an idea can be tracked back into the far past, in truth as far back as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, mostly, these ancient cookbooks were just very basic pictorial instructions for preparing food.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts are some clay tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel exhilarated. Continuing our culinary historical journey, we have two interesting recipe books which date from the 14th Century : a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, they are unconnected to the indian curry that is served today, but rather accounts of the types of food cooked for the rich people of that time. Over the succeeding few centuries, the rich families of Wesstern Europe tried to offer the most exotic meals, and as a result cooks and their collection of recipes became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 19th century that cookery and cookery books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down the recipes of their peers. When we get to the twentieth century, cooking publications were starting to become popular mostly due to increased literacy, people having more spare time and disposable income. |
